Chintz, the vibrant printed cotton fabric that transformed European interiors, embodies the rich history of Indian craftsmanship. Originating from the Coromandel Coast, particularly present day Machillipatanam, this exquisite textile with its glazed finish and intricate patterns began its journey to Europe in the 17th century.
First arriving as souvenir cargo around 1650, chintz quickly captured European imaginations. By 1675-1700, it was revolutionising home interiors, and from 1690 onwards, demand surged dramatically. The popularity of chintz not only disrupted established markets but also catalysed European industrialisation as manufacturers rushed to replicate its appeal.
