Other famed textiles of Coromandel

Coming Soon. Stay tuned !

The evolution of textile dyeing techniques showcases the profound influence of Indian craftsmanship on global textile production. The Coromandel Coast, in particular, was renowned for its exquisite printed and painted textiles, especially the vibrant, colourfast chintzes that captivated European markets. These textiles employed sophisticated dyeing methods using natural dyes like Chay root for red and indigo for blue, along with intricate mordanting techniques that ensured colour fastness.

The late 19th century saw significant advancements in synthetic dyes, including the accidental discovery of Mauvine in 1856, the synthesis of alizarin in 1869, and the commercialisation of synthetic indigo by 1897. These developments, while revolutionising the industry, were built upon the foundation of knowledge derived from traditional Indian dyeing practices.

Our studio has dedicated extensive research to recreate these historical Coromandel textiles, employing the same materials and techniques used centuries ago. This revival not only preserves a crucial piece of textile history but also demonstrates the enduring legacy of Indian dyeing expertise in shaping global textile craftsmanship.

Stay tuned for exciting updates coming soon; in the meantime, explore other hand-painted textiles from the same region.
