Hand-painted Kodalikaruppur

Revival Textile -Tanjore Maratha Kingdom

Once favoured by the Maratha kings of Tanjore,, Karuppur saris are a pure work of art, its production process is tedious and complex, as it involves successive applications of mordant painting with resit dyeing techniques over a finely woven Jamdani. Museum specimens around the world are believed to date from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Its lost patronage and its production has declined since the British annexed the Tanjore in 1855.
