A story of Revival & dedication
Reviving the legendary Coromandel textiles demands a level of excellence in multidisciplinary crafts that few can achieve. This endeavour encompasses traditional crafts such as Kalamkari, mordant printing, natural dyeing, resist dyeing, and Jamdani weaving. Mastering these arts takes years of hard work, as the legacy of Coromandel textiles represents the pinnacle of a craft tradition, an accumulation of knowledge spanning close to 400 years.
Consider the art of the Nayakas, which is the culmination of South India’s artistic tradition in the second millennium. More recent arts, like Mysore paintings, Tanjore paintings, and Kadappa paintings, are mere offshoots of this rich heritage. Thus, catching up with a craft like this required us to invest years of hard work and dedication.
One piece at a time.
The traditional methods we sought to revive are extraordinarily complex and labor-intensive. These methods include extracting plant materials, applying them, performing multiple layers of resist dyeing, and washing textiles in running water. Despite these challenges, we strive to produce textiles using the most authentic techniques possible, adhering to the same materials used in the legacy textiles, as much as we can.
